Martha’s Vineyard abounds with bird life, and you can spot wood ducks, ospreys, and even nesting barn owls at the Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary (off Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Rd., Edgartown, 508/627-4850, www.massaudubon.org), a rambling preserve of salt marsh and beach meadow.
If you prefer flora to fauna, island naturalist Polly Hill gathered nearly 1,000 different species of plants at the Polly Hill Arboretum (809 State Rd., West Tisbury, 508/693-9426 www.pollyhillarboretum.org, sunrise–sunset daily, $5 requested donation for adults), which has miles of paths through wildflower meadows and woodland of dogwood and magnolia.
