Charles Street has some 40 antiques stores along its one-third-mile length. While pricey, they offer a selection you won’t find anywhere else in the city. One of the best is Upstairs Downstairs Antiques (93 Charles St., 617/367-1950, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. daily), a warren of rooms stuffed with tableware, glassware, and other knickknacks from a dozen decades.
Armchair historians and explorers alike thrill at the selection of antique maps and charts at Eugene Galleries (76 Charles St., 617/227-3062, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Sat.; 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Sun.), which cover Boston, New England, and the rest of the world.
Worth making a trip out to Cambridge for the prices alone, Antiques on Cambridge Street (1076 Cambridge St., Cambridge, 617/234-0001, 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. daily) is filled with the wares of more than 100 sellers—furniture, artwork, vintage clothing, housewares, and more.
