Once the subway was extended up to Somerville in the 1980s, Davis Square went through a dramatic transformation from forgotten gulch of dollar stores and newsstands to a funky hipster heaven. The neighborhood has no fewer than five cafés, and come Saturday afternoon all of them are overflowing with Tufts students or recent grads, with real or computerized notebooks propped open.
True, the attempts by the Somerville Theater to brand the neighborhood the “Paris of the ’90s” fizzled, but the theater still anchors a vibrant cultural scene, and bars along Elm Street keep the streets hopping after dark.
