Over one mile of discount designer-brand stores—mostly in strip-mall form—await in the center of Kittery. From mainstream chains like J. Crew, The Gap, Banana Republic , and Polo Ralph Lauren to expensive companies like Calvin Klein, Cole Haan, Le Creuset, and Wedgewood, the big guns are all here.
That said, there isn’t much in the way of independent, local stores, unless you count the giant Kittery Trading Post (301 Rte. 1, Kittery, 207/587-6246, www.kitterytradingpost.com, 9 a.m.–9 p.m. Mon.–Sat.; 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Sun.), where you’ll find an epic selection of gear for camping, fishing, hiking (and in the hunting section, the frankly off-putting sight of ten-year-old boys fondling rifle models set out in racks on the open floor). Grab a dose of lumberjack chic in the store’s well-stocked plaid flannel section, or stock up for your next kayaking excursion in the boat section.
