The best way to explore the island is by bicycle, which can be rented with a signature and a promise at the Tidewater Motel (Main St., 207/863-4618). A good 10-mile loop traverses North Haven and Round the Island Roads. The island also has several great spots for hiking. A short rambling trail off of Old Harbor Road leads down to the Basin, where seals have been known to frolic in the surf.

Overlooking Carver’s Harbor, Lane’s Preserve offers acres of conservation land with blackberry and raspberry bushes ripe for the picking. While the rocky island isn’t known for its beaches, the granite trade has left an unexpected treasure—the abandoned quarries that are now filled with water.

In the summertime, families and teenagers mob Lawson’s Quarry (North Haven Rd.) and Booth’s Quarry (Pequot Rd.) to dive into the deep, crystal-clear swimming holes. It’s rumored there is another quarry where clothing is optional, but you’ll have to ask a willing local for directions.
