For an island so perfect for bike-riding, it’s odd that no bike rental facilities are available on-island. You can remedy that lapse by renting a bike at Ragged Mountain Sports (46 Elm St., Camden, 207/236-6664), and bringing it over on the ferry. Get an early start if you plan to cycle the length of the island, as the route is a full 20 miles each way. A shorter but still satisfying ride is the one from Dark Harbor to Pendleton Point, a distance of only eight miles.
On the southeast tip of the island, Pendleton Point offers a small sandy beach in the sheltered arms of a rocky cove, perfect for tidepooling and collecting driftwood.
