Rutting and foraging can be hard work—even the most overtaxed moose has to take a load off sometime. That’s where the Stress-Free Moose Pub & Cafe (65 Pritham Ave., Greenville, 207/695-3100, 11 a.m.–9 p.m. Sun.–Thu.; 11 a.m.–9:30 p.m. Fri.–Sat., $5–8) comes in. The casual eatery in the center of Greenville features sandwiches and wraps along with an outdoor patio for enjoying them. Patrons can really kick back in an upstairs area with comfy couches and board games; the bar is one of the few in town that stays open late.

A few doors down, The Black Frog (Pritham Ave., Greenville, 207/695-1100, www.theblackfrog.com, 11:30 a.m.–8 p.m. Sun.–Thurs., 11:30 a.m.–9 p.m. Fri. and Sat. $6–22) serves up a healthy dose of humor with such dishes as Moose Wings and Moose Balls (which are listed for $1,495). More to the point, the place makes a mean rack of BBQ ribs and a hearty lasagna loaded down with cheese and veggies. The dining room is built out on a dock over the lake and offers nice views of arriving seaplanes.

On the west side of the lake, The Birches Resort (off Rte. 6/15, Rockwood, 207/534-7305, www.birches.com, 7 a.m.–9 p.m. daily, $14–24) is the closest you’ll find to fine dining this side of Portland. Entrées such as rib eye with black-bean-and-corn salsa; or salmon with raspberries and wine sauce go better with the giant moose head hovering over the room.
