Catering to hikers and hunters alike, the Appalachian Trail Cafe (210 Penobscot Avenue; 207/723-6720, www.appalachiantraillodge.com, 5 a.m.–9 p.m., $6–9) serves burgers and flapjacks at a smoky coffee counter downtown. . Breakfast is available all day.

For a splurge, Fredericka’s at the Big Moose Inn (Rte. 157, Millinocket, 207/723-8391, www.bigmoosecabins.com, 5:30–9 p.m. Wed.–Sat. year-round, open Sun. Jul.–Aug., $17–24) can throw down with any big-city menu with sophisticated entrées like five-spice-dusted pork loin topped with crispy bacon and truffle oil. Its spacious dining room is all about blond wood and forest views.
