It’s slim pickings on fine dining in the park, but there are several modest eateries in nearby Millinocket that dish out good fare. Italian immigrants flooded this area during the logging heyday. Their legacy lives on at Orvieto (67 Prospect St., Millinocket, 207/723-8399, www.dicensiinc.com, 7 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon.–Fri.; 7 a.m.–2 p.m. Sat., $5–7), an authentic Umbrian deli and sandwich shop that will fulfill your craving for prosciutto, capicola, or provolone.
Catering to hikers and hunters alike, the Appalachian Trail Cafe (210 Penobscot Avenue; 207/723-6720, www.appalachiantraillodge.com, 5 a.m.–9 p.m., $6–9) serves burgers and flapjacks at a smoky coffee counter downtown. . Breakfast is available all day.
For a splurge, Fredericka’s at the Big Moose Inn (Rte. 157, Millinocket, 207/723-8391, www.bigmoosecabins.com, 5:30–9 p.m. Wed.–Sat. year-round, open Sun. Jul.–Aug., $17–24) can throw down with any big-city menu with sophisticated entrées like five-spice-dusted pork loin topped with crispy bacon and truffle oil. Its spacious dining room is all about blond wood and forest views.
