On the doorstep of Baxter State Park, the Appalachian Trail Lodge (33 Penobscot Ave., Millinocket, 207/723-4321, www.appalachiantraillodge.com, $35, $25 dormitory) is a favorite hostel for backpackers going all the way on the Appalachian Trail or day hikers looking for a place to group before or after tackling Katahdin. The bright-red family home has been converted into a bed-and-breakfast with single and double rooms, as well as a larger apartment for groups of up to six hikers.

If you are looking for advice on hiking or climbing in the park, owners Don and Joan Cogswell have the accumulated knowledge of 15 years of hikers, along with an eagerness to advise new arrivals.

$100–150

The Pleasant Street Inn (26 Pleasant St., Greenville, 207/695-3400, www.pleasantstreetinn.com, $110–160), a Victorian bed-and-breakfast located in Greenville center, is owned and run by three artist friends who decided to entertain guests while they perfected their crafts. The attention to detail shows throughout the inn, which has an unerring sense of romance in the design and photorealist paintings made by one of the innkeepers hung throughout the house.

Another of the hosts is a professionally trained chef who prepares gourmet breakfasts and, with advanced notice, will also cook a personalized dinner. The best detail of the house is the tall tower offering 360-degree views of the town and the lake. The inn offers romance packages that include moose safaris or pre-arranged cruises aboard the Katahdin.

$150–250

Someone had to cut the trees; someone had to own them. In 1885, lumber baron William Shaw took the profits from logging and poured them into a sprawling Victorian mansion with premium views over Moosehead Lake’s East Cove. Many of the lavish details that Shaw built into his mansion, such as stamped tin walls and stained glass, have survived its renovation into the Greenville Inn (40 Norris St., Greenville, 207/695-2206, www.greenvilleinn.com, $155–265), one of the most luxurious lodgings in the area.

After a hard day of rafting or snowmobiling, guests are pampered with plush duvets and marble showers in rooms decorated with strong, masculine colors. The new owners, who came to Maine to retire a few years ago, have added their own family heirlooms to the collection of Victorian antiques, and cook a full breakfast each morning. Private cottages out back are paneled with wood inside for a more rustic feel without sacrificing the level of luxury.
