Under $100

You won’t find any luxury resorts Downeast (at least not yet), but you won’t overpay for your room either. Cheap and clean describe the rooms at the Bluebird Motel (26 E. Main St., Rte 1, Machias, 207/255-3332, $75–80), an old-school motel with pine-paneled walls, cable TV, and air-conditioning. Outside of South America, not too many bed-and-breakfasts come with the opportunity for a llama trek after breakfast.

The Pleasant Bay B&B and Llama Keep (386 West Side Rd., Addison, 207/483-4490, www.pleasantbay.com, $50–135), near Cherryfield, is actually located on a working llama farm and offers rides along its trails for $15. Rooms are comfortably decorated with country quilts and a mix of seafaring and llama paraphernalia.

Walking into the Home Port Inn (45 Main St., Lubec, 207/733-2077, www.homeportinn.com, $95–115) is like entering the pages of a home design magazine. The seven guest rooms are designed with an artist’s eye, incorporating pleasing color schemes, cozy quilts, antiques, and folk art. The oversized bed-and-breakfast in the center of Lubec also has an excellent restaurant on-site that serves local seafood and continental cuisine.

$100–150

Small and decked out in country florals and handmade quilts, Riverside Inn (Rte 1, East Machias, 207/255-4134, $90–135), lives up to its name with a pretty waterfront location surrounded by well-tended gardens. The inn’s library is filled with good reads for cuddling up next to the fire with. Some bathrooms have clawfoot tubs, and rooms have queen-sized beds.
