Wendell Gilley Museum

Second to Audubon, no name perhaps is more sacred to bird-lovers than Wendell Gilley, who spent his life carving surprisingly realistic wooden birds. The Wendell Gilley Museum (Main St. & Herrick Rd., Southwest Harbor, 207/244-7555, www.wendellgilleymuseum.org, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Tues.–Sun. June–Oct.; 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Fri.–Sun. May and Nov.–Dec.; by appt. Jan.–Apr., $5 adults, $2 children 5–12, free children under 5) showcases the best of his work, along with woodcarving demonstrations.

Seal Cove Auto Museum

The brass and chrome are blinding at the Seal Cove Auto Museum (1414 Tremont Rd. & Pretty Marsh Rd., Southwest Harbor, 207/244-9242, www.sealcoveautomuseum.org, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. daily late May–mid-Oct., $5 adults, $4.50 seniors, $2 children 12 and under), which has more than 100 antique autos and dozens of vintage motorcycles on display.

Bass Harbor Light

The red glow of Bass Harbor Light (Lighthouse Rd., off Rte. 102A, Bass Harbor) perches moodily on the rocks in the southwest corner of the island; it’s a favorite for both photographers and romantics.
