Karen Holmes Godbout started out selling hot dogs and donuts to fisherman;
Maine-ly Delights (Grandville Rd., Bass Harbor, 207/244-3656, www.bassharbormaine.com, 11 a.m.–9 p.m. early Jun.–early Sept., $2–15) has now grown to a seafood shack par excellence, specializing in delicious crab rolls served in an unfussy environment. Sundays are known for her special crabmeat quiche.
Bliss out with a fantastic view of the water over basic-but-fresh fish specials at Seafood Ketch (1 McMullen Ave., Bass Harbor, 207/244-7463, 11 a.m.–9:30 p.m. Tues.–Sat., 11 a.m.–8 p.m. Sun.–Mon., June–Sept., $2–15).
Popular with sailors, Red Sky (14 Clark Point Rd., Southwest Harbor, 207/244-0476, www.redskyrestaurant.com, 5:30–9 p.m. Tue.–Sat. May–Oct., $19–27) is a minimalist bistro that follows the current trend of all-natural food, simply prepared. Its signature dish is grey sole stuffed with lobster and Maine shrimp with béarnaise sauce.
Between Bar Harbor and Northeast Harbor, Burning Tree (69 Otter Creek Dr./Rte. 3, Otter Creek, 207/288-9331,5–10 p.m. Wed.–Mon. Jun.–mid-Oct.) has won raves for its out-of-the-ordinary seafood concoctions. Think curry pecan flounder and crab cakes bursting with fresh crab meat. The secret of this sophisticated hotspot is definitely out—be sure to make reservations.
