You’ll know when you’ve come across the Keeler Tavern Museum south of Danbury (45 Main St., Ridgefield, 203/438-5485, www.keelertavernmuseum.org, 1–4 p.m. Wed. and Sat.–Sun. Feb.–Dec., $5 adults, $3 seniors and students, $2 children under 12, free for members): It’s the one with the cannon ball stuck in the corner. Redcoats fired at the building during the Battle of Ridgefield, the only Revolutionary War battle fought in Connecticut.

Four years before he turned traitor, the ubiquitous Benedict Arnold led a heroic band of Connecticut militiamen in an attempt to stop the British from retreating after the Danbury Raid. Eight militiamen were killed in the battle, including Connecticut militia captain David Wooster. Arnold himself had his horse shot out from under him in the battle but refused to surrender, displaying the bravery for which he was known in the early days of the war.

A plaque on Main Street marks the site of the battle; the Keeler Tavern Museum has artifacts about the engagement, including a 1780 engraving.
