For more than 40 years, the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center (305 Great Neck Rd., Waterford, 860/443-5378, www.oneilltheatercenter.org) has been a top incubator of dramatic talent. In addition to staged readings of new American plays, the theater sponsors a summer cabaret series with musicians, magicians, and dancers.
The friendly bartendresses are half the draw at the Bank Street Roadhouse (36 Bank St., 860/443-8280, www.crosbyrestaurantgroup.com), a rowdy bar that books blues and roots bands during the weekends.
Down the street, Bank Street Cafe (639 Bank St., 860/444/1444, www.bankstreetcafe.com) combines eight dart boards, three pool tables, and karaoke under one roof. On weekends, local rock and blues acts perform there.
