Governor Trumbull House

Make no mistake; the Revolutionary War was won just as much on beef and grain as on bullets and cannon fire. As the only colonial governor to side with the Rebels, Connecticut’s Jonathan J. Trumbull was charged with a massive provisioning effort that sustained the Continental Army in its darkest moments—including the awful winter at Valley Forge.

Trumbull commanded the effort from his modest Georgian home (169 West Town St., Lebanon, 860/642-7558, noon–4 p.m. Wed.–Sun. mid-May–mid-Oct., $3, free children under 6), which is now a house museum featuring period furniture and original intricate woodwork.

A few doors down, a big red barn served as the official war office (149 W. Town St., Lebanon, 860/916-1804, noon–4 p.m. Sat.–Sun., donations); the building has been moved from its original site a 100 feet south. The museum now houses arms and artifacts relating to the Revolution.
