With the profusion of local wineries in New England these days struggling at producing good product after trying winters, there is simply a lot of plonk out there in the tasting rooms. That’s why Sharpe Hill Vineyard (108 Wade Rd., Pomfret, 860/974-3549, www.sharpehill.com, 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Fri.–Sun., free) is such a welcome gem.
A labor of love by a pair of transplanted New Yorkers, Sharpe Hill Vineyard has won more than 60 medals for its signature semi-dry white called Ballet of Angels. (Better yet, B of A sells for only $12 at the retail store.) The vino is just the beginning at the winery, where attention to detail extends to a bathroom commode constructed of an antique European metal wine trug.
On weekends, Sharpe Hill Vineyard sponsors exclusive lunches for 12 people, which might feature steak Delmonico or chicken with herbes de provence. Meals are preceded by a wine tasting, so you can pair just right.
