Self-taught architect Theodate Pope Riddle not only achieved success in a time when women were limited in their professional pursuits, she also created a real stunner in the 1901 colonial revival mansion known as Hill-Stead Stead (35 Mountain Rd., Farmington, 860/677-4787, www.hillstead.org, tours 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Tue.–Sun. May–Oct.; 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Tue.–Sun. Nov.–Apr.; grounds open 7:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. year-round, $10 adults, $9 seniors, $8 students, $5 children 6–12, free children under 6). The mansion still has several works by Monet and Degas hung among its original furnishings, as well as a sunken garden on 152 acres of grounds.
