Subdued (read: not entirely authentic) but still entirely palatable Italian is all over the menu at Figaro (90 Elm St., Enfield, 860/745-2414, www.figaroenfield.com, 11:30 a.m.–10 p.m. Mon.–Sat.; noon–9 p.m.Sun., $13–20). Reasonable prices and fresh pastas (like the simple fettuccine pomodoro) keep it a popular spot.
Things get spicier at A Taste of India (216 Broad St., Windsor, 860/688-8333, 11:30 a.m.–10:30 p.m. Mon.–Fri.; 11:30 a.m.–10 p.m. Sun., $10–13). The relaxed atmosphere and quick service make it a good place to sample authentic tandoori.
The welcoming, fun Beanery Bistro (55 Palisado Ave., Windsor, 860/688-2224, www.thebeanerybistro.com, 7 a.m.–8 p.m. Mon.–Fri.; 8 a.m.–6 p.m. Sat.; 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Sun., $4.50–7) doles out more than just good food; it puts on regular book club meetings, entertainment, and weekly newsletters. That’s all the more reason to linger over your cranberry-rum-laced turkey sandwich or your homemade macaroons and chai tea.
Overlooking the Podunk River, The Mill on the River (989 Ellington Rd., S. Windsor, 860/289-7929, www.themillontheriver.com, 11:30 a.m.–10 p.m. Mon.–Fri; 5 a.m.–10 p.m. Sat.; 11 a.m.–8:30 p.m. Sun., $17–27) pairs a breathtaking setting with an ambitious menu. House standouts include eggplant timbale, fire-roasted tomato soup, and miso-glazed pork tenderloin.
