Few areas on earth squeeze such a varied topography into such a small space. New England covers an area of just over 70,000 square miles—making the region smaller than 20 of the U.S. states. Within that area, however, the region contains a multitude of landforms and habitats. Along the coastline, it runs from the sandy beaches of Connecticut and Rhode Island to the barrier beach of Cape Cod to the granite headlands north of Boston and the thousands of rocky fingers of Maine. In the interior, the terrain varies from the cranberry bogs and cedar swamps of Rhode Island to the soaring peaks of New Hampshire’s White Mountains. In between, it tucks into fertile farmland, deep pine forests, rolling mountains covered with old-growth oak and maples, and—of course—part of the most densely populated urban corridor in the country.
