In the State Game Lodge area in the northeastern quadrant of Custer State Park, the Lover’s Leap Trail begins behind the schoolhouse, across the street from the Peter Norbeck Visitor Center. The trail is three miles long and is rated as moderately strenuous. It is a loop trail that takes 2–3 hours to hike.

Lover’s Leap Trail climbs rapidly and provides beautiful views of the Cathedral Spires and Harney Peak in the distance. The hardest part of the hike comes early, so don’t be discouraged. At the top of the first ridge, about 45 minutes into the hike, there is a sign marking the spot where legend has it two lovers leapt to their deaths.

The summit of this hike is near 4,800 feet and the views are spectacular. From here the Needles formation and Harney Peak are clearly visible. The trail descends to Galena Creek. There are several creek crossings here and no bridges, so be prepared to get wet.

The trail ends back at the road (Hwy. 36), a short walk from the schoolhouse where the hike began.
