Ennis Fishing-Access Site (http://fwp.mt.gov, May–Nov., $12) just out of town on the south side of the bridge, is a more developed campground than most of the state’s fishing-access sites.
Once you get south of Cameron, there are plenty of public campgrounds. Ruby Creek and Palisades are Bureau of Land Management campgrounds (406/683-2337, www.blm.gov/mt, $8) just off Highway 287 about 25 miles south of Ennis.
About 34 miles south of Ennis, near the West Fork rest area, find both the West Fork Madison (406/682-4253, www.fs.fed.us/r1/b-d, late May–mid-Sept., $7) and the Madison River (late May–mid-Oct., $8) Forest Service campgrounds.
