Cross-Country Skiing
Trip Ideas
The broad North Fork Valley is just as beautiful, and even more isolated, when it’s covered with snow. Skiing is generally good here because cold temperatures keep the snow powdery. And it can get cold; a -35°F morning at the North Fork Hostel may sharply reduce outhouse visits, and early morning ski tours may not start quite so early.
Two ski trails start at the Polebridge Ranger Station: one, suitable for beginners, heads three miles north to Big Prairie; the other follows the six-mile-long unplowed road to Bowman Lake.
Stop in at the ranger station before heading out; they’ll tell you whether it’s safe to ski onto Bowman Lake.
