Cross-Country Skiing Around the Izaak Walton Inn: The Izaak Walton Inn is a great spot any time of year, but it’s especially magical as a wintertime base for cross-country skiing.

Going-to-the-Sun Road: It’s hard to visit Glacier Park without traveling the Going-to-the-Sun Road, and if you ride the park shuttle you’ll really get to ogle the details of the marvelously engineered road through a showcase of geology. Plus the road gives you access to great hiking trails.

Logan Pass: Take the park shuttle bus to this pass, the high point of the Going-to-the-Sun Road, and avoid the parking nightmare. Drop by the visitor center here, and if there are any naturalist hikes getting ready to leave, make sure to join in. Otherwise, enjoy the alpine scenery.

Highline Trail: After a visit to Logan Pass, spend a few hours on this trail, with its above-the-timberline views and chattering marmots. Go as far as you’d like, then turn around and return the way you came. If you go far enough, you can hook up with other trails and construct a fine backpacking trip.

Glacier Park Lodge: Like all the park’s lodges, Glacier Park Lodge has a spectacular lobby, and it’s not necessary to book a room here in order to visit and enjoy the architecture.

Grinnell Glacier: Quick! See a glacier while you still have a chance. Take a day hike from Many Glacier to reach Grinnell Glacier.

Upper Waterton Lake: Don’t neglect a visit to Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada, just north of the border. Take a boat ride on Upper Waterton Lake to reach prime hiking trails. It’s also OK just to ride the boat and never hike a step.
