Townsend and Upper Missouri

At Three Forks, the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin Rivers unite into the Missouri River. It’s no wonder, with such an abundance of water around, that Townsend and aptly named Broadwater County boast of their recreational facilities.

Perhaps not surprising in an area so close to the state capital, there is an embarrassment of riches in state parks along the Missouri, providing fishing, hunting, boating, and windsurfing opportunities. Visitors can even engage in a more traditional pastime: panning for gold. Several old mines provide pay dirt and teach prospecting skills.
