Trip Ideas
Deer Lodge was home to several early ranchers and settlers whose fine period houses attest to their wealth and ambition; the city’s commercial and civic buildings reflect a shared economic self-assuredness. The state’s first college buildings, built in 1878, are now used by the local school district.
At the Courthouse Square stand the Powell County Courthouse, a statue and fountain commemorating John Mullan and pioneers who came west along the Mullan Road, and a Milwaukee Road engine originally built to sell to the Soviet Union. There is an abundance of lovely old homes, including the girlhood home of Jeanette Kelly, the original Betty Crocker.
