Montana’s grandest historic homes grace the hillside above Helena. In an area roughly bounded by Stuart, Monroe, Dearborn, and Power Streets stand dozens of imposing monuments to the economic clout of their merchant, mining, or ranching owners.
The mansions display a bewildering assortment of styles; Mark Twain described these Helena homes as “Queen Anne in front and Mary Ann behind.” In all their opulence, these are what money could buy in Helena during the boom years of 1880–1900.
None of the old homes are regularly open for viewing, but a walk through these beautiful old neighborhoods is a must for anyone with an interest in historic homes.
