If you want to go native, stay at a guest ranch. Hildreth Livestock Ranch (406/681-3111, www.greatdivideadventure.com, $45–60 per person double occupancy, higher during big-game season) is a working Chiangus cattle ranch 50 miles southwest of Dillon that welcomes guests in guest houses on the ranch. Guest houses have full kitchens. Bicyclists are given a special welcome.

At the Five Rivers Lodge (406/683-5000, www.fiveriverslodge.com), perched above the Beaverhead River near spring-fed ponds on Highway 41, the emphasis is on fishing, although there are amenities for nonanglers. Guests stay in comfortable rooms, are fed three meals a day, and are accompanied by a guide on fishing expeditions to public streams and private spring creeks and ponds. Rates run $3,095 for five days of fishing and six nights of lodging. Shorter stays and nonfishing discounts are available.

Hidden Valley Guest Ranch (10135 Hwy. 91 S., 800/250-8802, $75–225 d) has lodging in cabins or deluxe tepees and outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and fishing.
