In the historic center of Butte, there are a couple of pleasant older motels.

The Finlen Hotel & Motor Inn (100 E. Broadway, 406/723-5461 or 800/729-5461, www.finlen.com, $54–72) was once Butte’s landmark hotel; although it’s now largely taken up with offices and apartments, a couple of floors are reserved for hotel rooms. It’s joined by an adjacent motor court and is central for exploring Butte’s nooks and crannies.

The nearby Capri Inn (220 N. Wyoming, 406/723-4391 or 800/342-2774, $55 and up) lacks the charm of the Finlen but is a good budget choice.

Those interested in staying in a grand historic home should check out the Copper King Mansion B&B (219 W. Granite St., 406/782-7580, www.thecopperkingmansion.com, $65–115). In addition to a B&B, the Copper King Mansion—William A. Clark’s private Xanadu, built in 1884—also serves as a museum. In fact, travelers stay in the rooms viewed by the public during museum hours. Access to the rooms is structured, so travelers should weigh potential disruptions against their need for seclusion before arranging a stay.

Most of Butte’s motels cluster around I-90 exit 127. Of these mostly chain operations, a few stand out.

Butte Comfort Inn (2777 Harrison Ave., 406/494-8850 or 800/442-4667, www.montana-motels.com, $95 and up) is one of Butte’s largest hotels. There’s a hot tub, indoor pool, fitness room, generous continental breakfast, and pets are allowed.

The Butte War Bonnet Hotel (2100 Cornell Ave., 406/494-7800 or 800/443-1806, www.buttewarbonnet.com, $81 and up) has an indoor pool and hot tub, exercise room, and restaurant and lounge.
