Moss Mansion

Just west of the downtown area is a district of beautiful old Victorian homes. Only one of these is open to the public, but for anyone interested in late-19th-century architecture, a walk along these streets (between Division and 3rd Streets, and Lewis and Yellowstone Streets) is a pleasant diversion.

The Moss Mansion (914 Division St., 406/256-5100, www.mossmansion.com, guided tours on the hour, 10 a.m.–3 p.m. summer, call for hours off-season, $7 adults, $5 seniors and students, $4 children 6–12) was built by an early Billings bank president who engaged Henry Hardenberg, the architect of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, to design his Billings home.

Completed in 1903, the three-story sandstone mansion has pronounced European touches. In fact, each room seems to be designed to reflect a different European country, from the Moorish entry hall to the Tudor dining room. Most of the original furniture and fixtures remain.
