George Mason River Retreat Area
George Mason, an area industrialist, so loved this area that he bequeathed 1,500 acres to the state for its preservation in 1954. Located about 15 miles east of Grayling on Canoe Harbor Campground Road, the George Mason River Retreat Area is considered part of the Au Sable State Forest.
Subsequent land acquisitions have nearly doubled the size of this natural area, which provides ample opportunity to fish, canoe, or hike along a stretch of the South Branch of the Au Sable River.
