You’ll find plenty of good, inexpensive public campgrounds in the Grayling area. Hartwick Pines State Park (4216 Ranger Rd., 989/348-7068, state park vehicle permit required, $16–33) in Grayling offers clean, modern sites that fill up fast. You might find a little more solitude (and fewer RVs) at the Au Sable State Forest (5.5 miles east of Grayling via N. Down River Rd., 989/826-3211, $15), with 10 campgrounds and more than 260 campsites. The Grayling-area brochure lists a number of other public campgrounds in the area.
