But Gaylord is best known for its golf, boasting the largest number of courses in the state: more than 20, with more on the drawing board all the time. The area around Gaylord, in fact, has emerged as America’s premier golf mecca, with the thickest concentration of designer courses anywhere in the United States, including those by well-known designers such as Robert Trent Jones, Sr., Tom Fazio, and Al Watrous.

If you have the time, consider visiting at least three of the area’s favored golf clubs. Head first to Onaway, on M-68, where you’ll find the Black Lake Golf Club (2800 Maxon Rd., 989/733-4653, www.blacklakegolf.com, daily Apr.–Oct., $40–85). Operated by the UAW, this magnificent golf course is part of the union’s 1,000-acre family center that sits astride picturesque Black Lake.

Another winning choice is Garland Resort (4700 N. Red Oak Rd., Lewiston, 989/786-2211 or 877/442-7526, www.garlandusa.com, daily May–Oct., $30–120). Considered one of the state’s most beautiful resorts, this family-owned destination presents four magnificent golf courses amid the woods of northeastern Michigan.

Lastly, schedule a tee time at the lovely Treetops Resort (3962 Wilkinson Rd., Gaylord, 989/732-6711 or 888/873-3867, www.treetops.com, daily Apr.–Oct., $30–135). This year-round resort keeps visitors busy with downhill skiing in winter, activities like tennis and biking in summer, and, of course, five stunning golf courses.
