Accommodations and Food
The typical sprawl of chain motels runs along M-35 between Escanaba and Gladstone, but some nice family-owned operations are still holding their own along the waterfront. The Terrace Bay Resort (7146 P Rd., Gladstone, 906/786-7554, www.terracebay.com, $79–149 d) on Little Bay de Noc between Escanaba and Gladstone, has nice, clean motel rooms with great bay views. The 200-acre resort complex includes an 18-hole golf course, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, a game room, and more. To find Terrace Bay, watch for the signs on U.S. 41 south of Gladstone.
For vittles, try the House of Ludington (223 Ludington St., Escanaba, 906/786-6300, www.houseofludington.com, lunch and dinner hours vary, $6–12), a historic structure that offers an upscale menu with a variety of Michigan favorites.
