The Sunset Resort Motel (1315 E. Bay, 906/387-4574, $59–89 d) has a great location right on Munising Bay at the east end of town. Some rooms have kitchenettes. Unlike most commercial strips, the one along M-28 on Munising’s near east side is still within walking distance of downtown and the waterfront.

It has some nice chain offerings like the Days Inn (420 E. M-28, 906/387-2493, www.daysinn.com, $59–89 d), the best of the chains with a close-in location and an indoor pool.

For a town on the edge of a national park that presumably gets a fair amount of tourist traffic, Munising has surprisingly little in the way of dining. Try Sydney’s (400 Cedar St., 906/387-4067, www.sydneysfamilyrestaurant.com, 6 a.m.–11 p.m. Mon.–Thurs., 6 a.m.–2 a.m. Fri.–Sat., 6 a.m.–10 p.m. Sun., $6–24) for fresh whitefish and lake trout, as well as steaks and a Friday seafood buffet, served with an Australian touch.

Muldoon’s Pasties (1246 W. M-28, 906/387-5880, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. daily) is the best spot in town for a fresh, authentic taste of this potpie-type meal, a U.P. classic.
