Kansas City is a destination for all seasons, but local events and activities peak in the spring and summer and again throughout the holiday season. Although outdoor dining and festivals are plentiful during summer months, a sweltering combination of high heat and humidity prompt heat advisories and warnings. If you do come in the summer, plan the bulk of your sightseeing during the early-morning or late- afternoon hours to take advantage of milder temperatures.
If you plan to see most of the city on foot, opt for the cooler, less-humid spring and fall months. Winter often brings ice, snow, and below-freezing temperatures.
Large crowds converge on Kansas City during the NASCAR races, American Royal barbecue and livestock festival in October, and the Plaza Lighting Ceremony held Thanksgiving night. Hotel rooms near these events are at a premium at that time, and some are booked up years in advance.
