Department of El Paraíso

The rolling hills and broad plains of the El Paraíso department in southeastern Honduras have long been favored by Hondurans for their rich agricultural potential and mineral wealth. The valleys of Jamastrán and Moroceli are dotted with farms, cattle ranches, and tobacco fields, and the surrounding hills are filled with coffee plantations.

The climate in El Paraíso is generally temperate and comfortable, with most villages and towns located between 800 and 1,000 meters in elevation. Several major river systems are either born in or pass through El Paraíso, including the Río Choluteca, the Río Coco on the border with Nicaragua, and the Río Guayambre, one of the major tributaries of the Río Patuca. Adventurers can begin trips in the department of El Paraíso into Olancho and Gracias a Diós, along either the Río Patuca or Río Coco.
