Traveling with Children

With its opportunities for exploring and learning, traveling with children in Honduras can be a wonderful experience—especially since discounts are given on domestic flights and in hotel rooms, making it more affordable as well. Hondurans are generally very accepting of children in restaurants or elsewhere (don’t be surprised if the staff offer to whisk your baby away to the kitchen while you eat), and young kids often become icebreakers between travelers and Hondurans.

Unfortunately, in the cities where crime rates are highest (San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba, and Tegucigalpa), children are seen as a vulnerability to would-be muggers, so be on greater alert for pickpockets and muggers when you’re with little ones. Teens often hang out in the malls without an adult, but it is not recommended that they do so elsewhere in these cities. And while there are never any guarantees, taking an afternoon stroll sans chaperone in places like the West End, Roatán, is considered perfectly safe.
