The once-thriving disco scene in San Pedro has given way to the ubiquitous lounge, and there are lots of good ones. There are also plenty of more casual bars, and several bars and lounges have dancing.

Located in the hopping zona viva, the lounge b412 (9a Calle and 16 Av. SO) is a great place to start out the evening, and its dance club 1201 downstairs plays mainly trance, techno, rave, and the occasional merengue or salsa.

Near the TGI Friday’s on Boulevard Los Proceres (between 18 and 19 Av. NO) is Treehouse, an open-air restaurant/lounge that makes a great place to have a drink; there’s dancing on weekend nights.

Living up to its name, Klein Bohemia (www.kleinbohemia.com, corner of 7a Calle SO and 8 Av., tel. 504/552-3172, 7 p.m.–1 a.m. Thurs., 7 p.m.–2 a.m. Fri.–Sat.) is where San Pedro’s artists and intelligentsia come to have a drink amid rotating art exhibitions. Films are shown every Thursday night.

If what you’re looking for is glam, head to Ottro Lugar Lounge (7 Calle SO between 18 and 19 Av.) just outside of the Circunvalación, or to Luca Luca (15 Av. SO between 8 and 9 Calle) in the zona viva. Another popular place for a dressed-up drink is Salotto (corner of 16 Av. SO and Blvd. Morazán), the bar inside of the Tre Fratelli Italian restaurant.

A popular but laid-back place for a brew is Caribbean Bar (16 Av. SO between 9 and 10 Calle, tel. 504/553-6149, open daily from 7 p.m. onward).

Two other spots popular with young sampedranos are Le Loft (16 Av. NO and 10 Calle), with two-for-one on vodka, rum, and whiskey on Wednesdays, and two-for-one martinis for ladies on Thursdays; and The Cube (10 Calle A, between 14 and 15 Av., www.thecuberestlounge.com), both with classic lounge and dance music.

Located in the zona viva, Spot (8 Calle SO between 15 and 16 Calle) is perhaps the only openly gay club in the country, usually packed with men getting down to disco and Top 40.
