Caxa Real

Around the corner from the Plaza San Francisco are the crumbling remnants of the colonial Caxa Real, or tax-collection house, built between 1739 and 1741. Destroyed by the earthquake in 1809, it now consists only of a front portion of the original building—and that has a small garden growing on top and is leaning at a precipitous angle.

The inscription above the door states that the building was constructed under direction of Lt. Col. Don Francisco de Parga, under orders of Royal Field Marshal Don Pedro de Rivera Villalón, to serve as the Royal Treasury for King Felipe and Queen Isabel.
