For cheap licuados, sandwiches, and baked goods, plus outdoor tables on a pleasant plaza, try the Rycle Repostería y Cafe (tel. 504/772-2331, 8 a.m.–8:30 p.m. daily), right across from the Iglesia de la Merced.
One block north of there, Coffee and Cakes (tel. 504/772-1729, 7:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Mon.–Fri., 8 a.m.–6 p.m. Sat.) smells delicious as you walk by and also serves meals like roast chicken.
A nice place to cool off with an ice cream is Helados Eskimo (8 a.m.–10 p.m. daily), located between the Catedral de Santa María and the municipality building on parque central.
The ubiquitous Espresso Americano is near the Iglesia de la Merced.
