An excellent value in this price range is Hostal de Doña Victoria (3a Calle 2-38 Zona 3, tel. 7951-4213/14, $25 d), in a 400-year-old colonial home radiating with atmosphere. Its eight rooms centered round a pretty courtyard and café are tastefully decorated and have TV, desk, and private hot-water bathroom.
Around the corner at 2a Avenida and 4a Calle, Hotel Las Terrazas (tel. 7951-2763, $20 d) is under the same management but is a different concept altogether with 22 rooms in a modern building with private bath and electric hot-water heater. It’s clean but not nearly as charming as the hostel.
West of the plaza, the Hotel Rabin Ajau (1a Calle 5-37 Zona 1, tel. 7951-4296, $17 d) has rooms with private bath and ancient electric hot-water heaters, firm beds, and cable TV. The rooms are lit by a single fluorescent bulb and tend to feel dark.
Just off the plaza and centrally situated, as its name would indicate, is Hotel Central (1a Calle 1-79 Zona 1, tel. 7952-1442, $23), with clean rooms built around a garden courtyard. All rooms have private hot-water bathroom and cable TV.
