Hotel Mi Casa (5a Avenida “A” 13-51 Zona 9, tel. 5709-4466, www.hotelmicasa.com, $35–65 d), in a pleasant middle class neighborhood, has rooms with private bath and cable TV or shared bath. All rooms include breakfast and transfer to or from the airport. The comfortable rooms have fans and reading lamps.

In this price category is the Howard Johnson Inn (Avenida La Reforma 4-22 Zona 9, tel. 2360-7188 or 2361-6566, www.hojo.com, $70 d), with all the standard amenities you would expect from this international hotel chain, including air-conditioning, fan, nice wooden furniture, phone, and TV. Airport transfers are included and there’s a small restaurant in the lobby. Your breakfast might be included in the room rate. Try to get a room facing the outside street.
Just one block west of Avenida La Reforma is the excellent-value Hotel Residencia del Sol (3a Calle 6-42 Zona 9, tel. 2360-4823, www.residenciadelsol.com, $60–70 d). It has comfortable, carpeted rooms, some with city views and windows shaded by trees, with private bath and in-room Internet.

Among Guatemala City’s numerous international hotel chain options is the 
Barceló Guatemala City (7a Avenida 15-45 Zona 9, tel. 800/227-2356, www.barceloguatemalacity.com, $91–177 d), with six different room types to choose from and all the standard comforts usually found in the Spanish hotel chain’s properties. American and United Airlines have offices in the lobby of this former Marriott property.
The Guatemala City location of a Guatemalan luxury hotel chain enjoying success throughout Central America, Hotel Princess Reforma (13 Calle 7-65 Zona 9, tel. 2334-4545, www.hotelesprincess.com, $120 d) is a winner for its sophisticated old-time ambience. Amenities include a swimming pool, gym, restaurant, and English pub–style bar. Its 110 rooms have air-conditioning. It is curiously the only of its Central American counterparts that is not part of the Hilton chain.
