Groceries

Market Plaza acts as a village within a village, with a general store, a post office, a bank, and public restrooms. If you’re looking for picnic or camping supplies, the General Store (928/638-2854 or 928/638-2262) sells everything from souvenirs to groceries to fishing licenses. You can buy or rent camping and hiking equipment here, including some pretty serious gear like water-filtering systems, sleeping bags, and camp stoves. If cooking doesn’t sound like a vacation, the deli has ready-to-go sandwiches, pizza, fried chicken, and other hot items.

Internet and Cell Phones

Don’t count on your cell phone. It’s highly unlikely that you’ll get a signal if you hike inside the canyon, and even on the South Rim, service can be spotty. Same goes for Internet. If you can’t bear to leave your computer at home, you’ll be happier staying in Tusayan, where several motels and a couple of cafés offer Internet hookups. Inside the park, both the community library (928/638-2718) and research library (at park headquarters) have Internet access.

Laundry and Showers

Coin-operated laundry and showers are available at the Camper Services building near the entrance of Mather Campground. Hours vary widely, depending on the season. Current hours are posted on-site.

Gas and Garage Services

Need gas? There’s no longer a gas station in Grand Canyon Village. Your last chance to fill up is in Tusayan, seven miles south of the village; or at Desert View, just inside the park’s east entrance, 30 miles from the village. The pumps at the park’s Desert View Chevron (9 a.m.–5 p.m. daily) have 24-hour credit-card service.

Garage services (926/638-2631, 8 a.m.–noon and 1–5 p.m.) are available in Grand Canyon Village east of the train depot. The garage can provide emergency repairs, including tires, belts, batteries, and hoses. If more serious repairs are needed, tow service is available to Williams or Flagstaff.

Car Rentals and Taxis

Arrangements for rental cars at the Grand Canyon Airport must be made in advance through Enterprise Car Rental (928/ 774-9407). Taxi services (928/638-2822 or 928/638-2631, ext. 6573) are available 24 hours a day year-round. Taxis will even deliver hikers and backpackers to South Rim trailheads.

Day Care

The Kaibab Learning Center (928/638-6333, 7:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Mon.–Fri.) offers daycare services for infants and children up to 12 years old, when spaces are available. Immunization records must be provided.

Religious Services

The Park Service doesn’t endorse any particular religious group or message, but a number of local congregations offer services inside the park and in nearby communities. Schedules of services are posted at the visitor center in Canyon View Information Plaza, Mather Campground, Shrine of the Ages, and at the information kiosk near the post office.

Service Organizations

Alcoholics Anonymous holds nonsmoking meetings on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (7 p.m.) in Kachina Lodge. The Grand Canyon Rotary Club meets Thursdays at El Tovar Hotel. The Lions Club (928/638-0666) meets twice monthly in Tusayan.
