Situated on a mesa overlooking Lake Powell, the town of Page (population 9,500) sprang up during the construction of Glen Canyon Dam, which commenced in 1956. Most visitors come here to explore Lake Powell and its canyons—nearly 2,000 miles of shoreline, most of it in Utah, including Rainbow Bridge National Monument.
The lake glitters like a sapphire among a setting of reddish sandstone buttes, beckoning photographers. Equally photogenic are the sinuous curves of Antelope Canyon, east of town on the Navajo reservation. You can tour the dam, enjoy a flat-water float downstream to Lees Ferry, explore the John Wesley Powell Memorial Museum, and hike, drive, or boat the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. For information on tours and boat rentals, visit the local chamber of commerce (608 Elm St., Page, AZ 86040, 928/645-2741, www.pagelakepowellchamber.org) or tourism bureau (www.pagelakepowelltourism.com).
From Page, head south on Highway 89 to get to the Grand Canyon’s North Rim (120 miles) or South Rim (130 miles). For the North Rim, turn west on Highway 89A and continue to Jacob Lake, then turn south on Highway 67 and drive the remaining 45 miles to the rim. For the South Rim, stay on Highway 89, passing Cameron and turning west at Highway 64.
Airports
The Page Municipal Airport (238 10th Ave., Page, AZ 86040, 928/645-4337) is served by Great Lakes Airlines (928/645-1355 or 800/554-5111, www.greatlakesav.com), with flights to Phoenix and Denver.
You can get to Page from Salt Lake City via Frog Air (801/596-3764 or 801/537-1537, www.americanaviationwest.com), or charter a trip with the carrier from the Page airport. Other charter companies flying out of Page include Las Vegas–based Westwind Air Tour (928/645-2494) and Scenic Airlines (702/638-3303 or 800/634-6801). Smaller airstrips are located near several Lake Powell marinas.
Cars and Shuttles
Avis (800/331-1212) and Enterprise (800/736-8222) rent cars at the Page airport. If you aren’t driving or renting a car, you can charter transportation from Al’s Transportation (928/645-3420), Satori’s (928/645-0069), and Grand Circle Shuttle (940 Castle Rock St., Page, AZ 86040, 928/645-6806).
Accommodations and Food
More than 20 hotels and motels offer lodging in Page, but many visitors who come here choose to stay on a houseboat. At Lake Powell Resort (928/645-2433 or 899/528-6154, www.lakepowell.com, $95–200) on Wahweap Marina, you can sleep on land or on the lake. Courtyard by Marriot (928/645-5000 or 800/321-2211, www.marriottcourtyardpage.com, $100–150) also offers resort-style accommodations near the golf course.
Less expensive options include Bashful Bob’s (928/645-3919, www.bashfulbobsmotel.com, $40) and the Red Rock Motel (928-645-0062, www.redrockmotel.com, $50). Best Western, Budget Host, Days Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Motel 6, Quality Inn, Super 8, and Travel Lodge are among the national chains represented here. Marinas at Wahweap, Bullfrog, and Hall’s Crossing have developed campgrounds with RV hookups, and backcountry camping is allowed in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, with some restrictions.
Page’s numerous restaurants serve up everything from fast food to fine dining. Most are inexpensive to moderate, though if you want to eat with a view at Wahweap Lodge’s Rainbow Room (928/645-2433), you’ll pay a bit more. The Dam Bar & Grill (928/645-2161) has steaks, pasta, salads, and live music. Strombolli’s (928/645-2605), a popular Italian eatery with sister restaurants in Flagstaff and Cottonwood, is a great place to carbo-load before a day of hiking and exploring. National chains include Burger King, Denny’s, Jack-in-the-Box, KFC, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Subway, and Taco Bell.
