If neither the mermaids nor the water slides at Weeki Wachee Springs are of interest, Weeki Wachee Canoe & Kayak Rental (State Rd. 50 at U.S. 19, 352/597-0360, 9 a.m.–noon Mon.–Fri., 9 a.m.–11 a.m. Sat.–Sun.) is located at the back end of the parking lot to Weeki Wachee Springs. The convenient location allows boaters to put in close to the nearby springs, and in the winter, the river is good manatee-watching territory.
Golfers in the area head straight to the Plantation Inn Golf Resort & Spa (9301 W. Fort Island Tr., Crystal River, 352/795-4211, www.plantationinn.com), which has a 9-hole par-33 course and an 18-hole par-72 course.
Apollo Deep Sea Fishing (1340 NW 20th Ave., Crystal River, 352/795-3757, www.apollodeepseafishing.com) operates a 60-foot boat into the Gulf of Mexico for anglers looking for grouper and sea bass.
Captain Don Chancey pilots a smaller 22-foot craft for Flat Chance Charters (groups meet at 5300 S. Cherokee Way, Homosassa, 352/303-9399) that allows for limited offshore runs and flats fishing.
