Between DeLand and Orlando is the community of Cassadaga, also known as the “Psychic Center of the World.” Such a title isn’t bestowed idly, and Cassadaga more than lives up to, and trades off, its reputation as a home of spiritualists, psychics, mediums, and healers.

The Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp (1112 Steven St., Cassadaga, 386/228-2280, www.cassadaga.org) traces its history back to the 1875 arrival of George P. Colby, a New Yorker who traveled around the country impressing people with his various healing and clairvoyant powers. Guided to this part of Central Florida by Seneca, his Native American spirit guide, Colby established the spiritualist community at Cassadaga in 1894.

Today, the 57-acre “camp” (there is no actual camping here) is home to a few hundred permanent residents but sees a near-constant influx of true believers, curious onlookers, and folks just looking for a little spiritual comfort. Healers and mediums will analyze and attempt to correct your spiritual and physical ailments…for a price, of course.

It looks just like a regular little community with some turn-of-the-20th-century buildings, houses, and shops, except as anyone of the camp’s residents will tell you, there’s always more than meets the eye.
