The Catedral San Pedro Apóstol (Calle Charro near Av. Independencia, open daily 8 a.m.–8 p.m.) is not a major landmark, but it has a beauty all its own and has had a tumultuous struggle to stay standing. The church was constructed in 1850. In 1865, the church was leveled by a hurricane and later reconstructed. As if that weren’t enough, it was devastated by fire in 1886. It was then that the present temple was erected.
In 1996 it was elevated to a cathedral. In 2000, a five-year remodeling phase was set into motion. But as of 2005, no real progress had been made. The parishioners remain infuriated about this delay and have demanded that the government finally pay attention to the stained glass, marble floors, and carved wood, which could very well be ruined forever if ignored any longer.
