West of Puerto Plata

As the North Coast stretches past Puerto Plata to the west, the concentration of tourist areas and visitors declines enormously. It is partially because of the popularity of the all-inclusive resort vacationing trend, which keeps people grounded in Playa Dorada; partially because there is a lot to do east of Puerto Plata; and partially because visitors have not been made aware of the offerings of the western half of the northern coast.

Those who do venture over visit a few select places for a short amount of time, perhaps on a guided tour for the day with a tour package from their all-inclusive resort.

Whatever the case may be, it is well worth the effort to check out this half of the North Coast. Whether checking out the beautiful beach at Luperón, doing some world-class diving in Monte Cristi, canyoning in Damajagua, or going to the Haitian market in the border town of Dajabón, excitement and individuality await but crowds and mass tourism do not.
