The Gate of Mercy (Arzobispo Portes, near Palo Hincado) was erected as the western door to the city and is part of the original walls. It got its name because of the way some of the less fortunate locals would flock to it for protection during hurricanes and earthquakes.
This is also where the first shot was fired on February 27, 1844, in the struggle for independence from neighboring Haiti.
