In the Teatro Nacional (National Theater, Plaza de la Cultura, tel. 809/687-3191, US$4–15) you can see performances for an amazingly affordable price. Ballet, symphony, drama, and opera performances are all held here. The ticket office is open 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. and 3:30–6:30 p.m. For show information and times, call the box office, check the weekend edition of the newspaper, or ask the concierge at your hotel.

Palacio de Bellas Artes (Máximo Gomez and Independencia, tel. 809/682-1325, www.bellasartes.gov.do) has performances from the students of the National Conservatory. You can treat yourself to an evening of the orchestra, ballet, jazz, or theater.

Casa de Teatro (Arzobispo Meriño 110, tel. 809/688-8173, www.casateatro.com) has performances in jazz, Latin-jazz, dance, and other various showcases. It also has art shows and readings.

If sitting in a dark theater on your Caribbean vacation appeals, then Cinemacentro Dominicano (Av. George Washington, tel. 809/688-8710) and Hollywood Diamond Cinemas (Av. Abraham Lincoln, Diamond Mall, tel. 809/683-1189) both show Hollywood new releases as well as releases from around the world. It could be a good rainy-day option.
